IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME DONATING OR IF YOU HAVEN’T GIVEN FOR A LONG TIME, please consider donating blood as a way to consistently and regularly make your community stronger and healthier. Many donors give when they hear there is an ‘Emergency’ or in response to a crisis, but the need for donated blood isn’t something that occurs occasionally. Many patients with diseases or chronic issues need regular transfusions to maintain a quality of life. By dedicating yourself to the idea of donation as a regular way to support patients in western Washington, you’re creating reliable safety net for your family, friends, strangers, neighbors, and maybe even yourself someday.
FAQ’S:
How can I best prepare to donate?
The best way to have a positive donation experience is to take good care of your body as the blood drive nears. One of the most common deferrals is a low iron (hematocrit) level. At a week out, eating foods high in iron (e.g. red meat, dark green vegetables, raisins) may help increase iron levels. For more ideas, do an internet search for “food with iron”. A few days out, drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated. On the morning of your donation, eat a decent breakfast and continue to stay well hydrated. If you plan to exercise, it’s much safer to do it a few hours before your donation.
How can I help maintain this service?
Folks who are able to donate can come in and give blood. Also, whether you’re eligible or not, you can help spread the word by forwarding this message around or inviting your co-workers and friends to take part or donate with you! Blood drives provide blood for all the patients in hospitals in our community and therefore, they’re a resource that belongs to everyone and everyone can take a role (and pride) in their success. Give and/or help get others to do the same. YOUR EFFORTS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY MAKE EVERY ONE OF US SAFER!
How does my donation help my community?
The Puget Sound Blood Center serves over 70 hospitals and clinics in western Washington. Patients in almost every medical facility from Blaine, WA, to Vancouver, WA, will receive blood products from volunteer donors just like you. In order to meet the demand of those patients while maintaining a safe emergency supply the Puget Sound Blood Center must register around 900 donors per weekday and collect around 800 units from those donors. The bulwark blood supply for our region depends on thousands of local individuals every week who make the decision to give blood and help keep folks safe when they need the gift of life-saving blood for treatment of trauma, cancer, chronic illnesses and surgeries.
