LFP City Council study session re: the new tree ordinance is TONIGHT, August 28th at 6pm, followed by the Council meeting.
PLEASE COME and support the recommendations of the Urban Forest Task Force. Trees cut in LFP need to be replaced, or soon we will lose our forest. The Council needs to hear from residents who support protection and replacement of trees!
Being Green is the “in” thing… but is LFP going to stay green??
What do you think about the gradual logging of the big trees of Lake Forest Park?
Have you driven around lately and noticed those new, big gaps of sky showing through where large tracts of forest have been removed to build more houses? To see a recent example, go to 44th Ave. just off NE 178th, where 30 trees were removed (permitted by the city). It’s hard to understand why every single stick had to be removed? Can’t the builder work around a few trees?
Let’s not forget our city’s middle name: FOREST. Do we want to become another Ballard, devoid of all but a few big trees? If so, we’ll have to change the name to “Lake Park.”
It is true that the trees in LFP are maturing, and that they need to be managed. But beware the disreputable tree-removal services going door-to-door, trying to scare people into removing the trees because they are “dangerous.” Be sure to get a second opinion. Best yet, a certified arborist or Plant Amnesty can take a look and see if you really do have a hazardous tree that needs to be removed.
If each household in LFP removed the one to three large trees that are permitted each year, it won’t be long before our forest is gone. Most important, if you cut down a large tree -- replace it!! Many times, landowners aren’t following the terms of their permits -- they don’t replant at all, or they replace a native large tree with a small ornamental.
Many of us moved to LFP because of the natural beauty of the landscape here. Our big trees enhance property values, keep our homes cool in the summer, protect soil from erosion, provide habitat for animals, and so much more! Neighbors, let’s be aware, and take care of our trees. Let our city leaders know that we want to keep the forest in Lake Forest Park.
